The Rugby team set off to Norwich Rugby Club for this year's County Finals this morning with the clouds ominously grey. However, Mrs Newstead always says that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, so we wrapped up warm and took our very waterproof waterproofs and a large tarpaulin (which proved to be very useful later!).
During the morning, our aim was to finish high placed and thus qualify for the final eight. We got off to a very good start, with a 7-5 victory over Methwold. We then overcame a two try deficit to beat Spooner Row 7-5 again and finished the morning top of our group with an 8-3 win against East Norfolk champions, Fairhaven. We had qualified for the final eight and were absolutely delighted, as we returned to the clubhouse for warmth and a chippy treat!
Despite the rain setting in after lunch, we did not stick to form and take an eternity to get started again; instead, we just carried on winning with victories against Wreningham (7-5) and Bawburgh (8-5). Needing only a win or draw in our final game to take us through to the County Final, we went into our final game against Salhouse with confidence. Perhaps it was the two match break or perhaps we were just getting tired in the cold afternoon, but the ball just did not bounce kindly for us in this game, which ended 6-4 to Salhouse. We then went on to play Hockwold in a bad tempered third place final, eventually losing 7-5.
Well done to everyone- fourth place in the small schools' County Final is an achievement to be very proud of. We played some wonderful rugby and in the very best way. Congratulations to Ethan in particular for his Sporting Achievement Award.
Ziggy, Felicity, Kieran, Ethan, Jess, Lola, Noah and José- all rugby heroes today. Thanks also to Richard and to Ethan's mum and dad for their support.
